Formed over thousands of years in the tectonic rift valley of Thingvellir National Park, Lake Þingvallavatn (Thingvallavatn) is a magnificent, crystal-clear volcanic lake. It is home to a completely unique, ancient strain of wild brown trout. Isolated since the last Ice Age, these brown trout have evolved to colossal sizes, feeding on the rich volcanic nutrients and abundant Arctic char. Specimens exceeding 20 pounds are caught regularly, with the lake record standing at a staggering 36 pounds.

We operate the beats under strict catch-and-release, fly-only regulations, ensuring that these rare and ancient fish continue to thrive.

Anglers on the ION Beats alternate between two highly productive and distinct geothermal shorelines:
Ölfusvatnsárós
The mouth of the Ölfusvatnsá River as it empties into the lake. Rich currents and sudden drop-offs create a prime feeding lane for massive trout hunting schools of char.
Þorsteinsvík
A geothermal, warm-water bay. Natural volcanic hot springs warm the water, attracting huge numbers of char and giant trout seeking comfort and rich feeding hatches.
Sight-Fishing
Gin-clear volcanic water allows for thrilling sight-casting. Spot massive black shapes moving over volcanic rocks and cast large streamers or delicate nymphs.
