Iceland's Hidden Gem Wilderness
Situated in the deep, untamed heart of the Icelandic Highlands approximately 150 km from Reykjavík, the Highland Fishing Lodge at Þóristungur stands on the volcanic shores of Lake Sporðöldulón. Completely renovated in 2019, this remote oasis provides access to a surreal lunar landscape defined by cascading waterfalls, deep basalt canyons, mossy green peaks, and glacial runoffs that have filtered through volcanic lava fields into crystal-clear rivers.
Here, anglers target massive, brilliantly colored native Arctic char and wild brown trout in highly dynamic waters, entirely shielded from public access. The fishery is operated exclusively by Fish Partner, ensuring private beats and highly controlled rod pressures.
The Highland Fisheries
The Highland Lodge serves as your launching point for two incredibly unique rivers and thousands of surrounding mountain lakes:
Kaldakvísl
A gorgeous, multi-faceted river featuring towering waterfalls and steep canyons. Sight-fish with dry flies in turquoise pools for giant Arctic char and deep resident browns.
Tungnaá
Once a muddy glacial river, it is now filtered crystal-clear by a hydroelectric plant upstream. A technical spring-creek fishery famous for colossal Arctic char up to 10 lbs.
Highland Lakes
Explore remote high-elevation waters like Fellsendavatn. Perfect for float-tubing or wading for highly aggressive, surface-feeding native brown trout.
The Lodge Experience
Following its extensive 2019 upgrade, the Highland Lodge offers comfortable, warm accommodation for up to 10-12 guests. It features twin and double bedrooms with heated slate flooring, cozy shared bathroom facilities, a spacious mudroom with individual wader dryers, and a large dining and lounge area with panoramic windows overlooking the desolate, beautiful volcanic peaks.
Despite its isolation, the lodge dining experience is outstanding. Chefs serve hearty breakfasts, hot stream-side lunches (cooked in the wild over gas grills), and a three-course traditional Icelandic dinner each night, centered on freshly harvested mountain herbs, local lamb, and organic local vegetables.
